It’s winter and it’s my birthday. I’m in the mood for comfort food.
But as many of you know, I have a frugality trait. Thus I find it difficult to spend money on dining out and other nice things most people enjoy on a regular basis. So I started looking for birthday freebies a while ago and decided to write a nice blog post about it so that all of you can enjoy it on your birthday as well.
It didn’t work out quite as I planned…
When a plan fails, it may turn out to be a good thing in the end. With my experience, I was able to identify the loopholes that exist and figure out a way through them to ensure a hassle-free special day for my readers.
Let’s start with the main course…
Pizza, Pizza, Pizza
Both Romans Pizza and Debonairs have a birthday special going on at the moment.
Romans Pizza gets a thumbs up from me! When we placed our order I presented my ID, and voila! They were quick with their service and the food was fresh and delicious, as always. I guess you figured that we are big Romans Pizza supporters.
The deal is that you get 20% off your bill, no matter what you order.
Debonairs gives you R50 off any order, but the order must be placed through the app or online. You can follow this tutorial, and remember to use the code on their website.
Next up, something sweet…
Let’s Talk Donuts
I have the Krispy Kreme app on my phone, and so I received a notification on my birthday that I can collect a dozen donuts for free. Oooh, I was so excited and went to Menlyn Mall to try it out. When I came there, ready to redeem my voucher, there was total confusion between me and the staff!
The assistant told me that the special is not valid until I show them the SMS. Isn’t that the purpose of the app? Not to send SMSs anymore.
Then I explained to her that I got the notification on my app. She didn’t look very pleased with me. I was confused so I just left the store, feeling like a criminal for asking for my donuts. A major communication mishap.
Luckily, I’ve since gotten more details, and I want to help you, future birthday person, to prevent a situation like mine.
After I looked at the notification on the app more clearly, I saw the required steps clearly indicated as below.
My advice would be to just go to the store, order your 12 donuts and redeem the voucher using the app and your slip. Don’t discuss it with any of the staff beforehand. When it comes time to pay, wait for the staff to ring up your bill, and then follow the steps in the notification to have the bill cleared.
Only if there’s a problem while redeeming of the voucher, then call the manager.
Luckily my voucher is still valid for 30 days so I might try it again…
Time for Coffee
Oh, Starbucks also has a birthday special but there are a few things you should know. You have to join the rewards program at least seven days before your birthday and make sure to fill in the correct birth date in your profile.
Then you have to make at least a one-star transaction before your birthday (I’m not a regular Starbucks customer so this voucher didn’t work for me).
The voucher is only valid on your birthday. You can choose between a handcrafted beverage, food item, or ready-to-drink bottled beverage. For more info visit their website.
Remember that birthdays aren’t the only time when free coffee is available.
I Scream for Ice-Cream
Last but not least, Spur gives a delicious free ice-cream (plain vanilla) after your meal. Then their highly talented staff members transform into an African choir and put sparkles to your birthday with their special performance. Plus you get a star-light!
All you need to do is enjoy a meal at Spur (you need to sit down in the restaurant). Afterward, tell the waiter about your birthday. They will bring the ice cream and sing their signature Spur song for you. And the whole restaurant will be staring at you, but only for a moment.
I hope you’ve found this article informative. Without the consumer, no business will be able to survive. I think it’s just fair to use all the freebies they give us. It also gives us the opportunity to make a positive connection with their brand. And in turn, we build a relationship which establishes loyal behavior that can be passed on for generations to come.
